Origin Story

This exceptional lot comes from the highland communities of the Gakenke District in Muhondo, Rwanda, a region known for its steep volcanic slopes and ideal microclimates. Grown between 1850 and 2200 m.a.s.l., the cherries develop slowly, creating dense, high-quality Bourbon beans with remarkable flavour potential.

Producers in this area rely on careful handpicking to ensure only the ripest cherries are selected. After harvest, the fruit undergoes a natural (dry) process, where whole cherries are sun-dried on raised beds. This slow, meticulous drying enhances sweetness, intensifies fruit character, and results in a cup profile that is both vibrant and layered.

This lot is composed of 100% Bourbon, a traditional variety deeply rooted in Rwanda’s coffee heritage. Known for its expressive sweetness and balance, Bourbon thrives in the high elevations of Gakenke, making this origin a standout representation of the varietal.

Roastery & Brewing Notes

Muhondo offers a bright yet comforting flavour profile with excellent clarity and structure. The natural process brings forward pronounced fruit tones, while the Bourbon variety adds depth and smoothness. Expect a lively start of orange aromatics, followed by rich dark chocolate, and a clean finish accented by a hint of vanilla.

This coffee performs beautifully as a filter brew, highlighting its sweetness and layered complexity. It also makes for an expressive espresso with a syrupy body and a long, elegant finish. For a refreshing twist, it pairs well with iced milk drinks where the chocolate and citrus notes remain pleasantly pronounced.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Bright citrus with soft vanilla-like florals.

Flavour: Lively orange leading into dark chocolate richness, supported by delicate vanilla tones.

Finish: Smooth, sweet, and lingering with balanced fruit and cocoa.
