Origin Story

The Hindi word 'Ratnagiri' translates literally to 'Pearl Mountain', a reference to the majestic silver oak trees that adorn this farm like a crown. Since 1920, this estate has been a testament to tradition and craft, passed down through generations of the Patre family. Today Ratnagiri is lovingly nurtured by Ashok Patre, a man deeply rooted in his devotion and respect for the art of coffee cultivation.

Ratnagiri Estate is a testament to the symbiotic harmony between man and nature. It’s a beacon of organic and biodynamic farming, proudly sporting a Rainforest Alliance Certification. Soil tests are a ritual performed every quarter, followed by organic amendments to maintain the soil's health. Ionic seawater and seaweed extracts are employed to bolster the plants' immunity and enhance the fruits' sugar levels.

The estate is a thriving Eden, offering a triple-layered canopy of shade to its inhabitants, from a wide array of bird species to monkeys, leopards, wild boars, tigers, mongoose, and occasional elephants. This rich biodiversity is a testament to Ashok's unwavering commitment to farming practices that prioritise ecological balance and environmental unity. Ratnagiri Estate is more than just a farm; it's a testament to the art of coffee cultivation, standing tall as a shining example in their pursuit of excellence.

The jewel in their crown is this 86-hour extended carbonic maceration natural processed coffee. This exquisite brew is born from the Cauvery varietal, thriving at lofty altitudes of 4450 feet in the heart of the Giri Patte block. Harvested at a perfect Brix measure of 23.9, the cherries are meticulously selected, and ensconced in stainless steel fermenters. The tanks are then infused with carbon dioxide, allowing the coffee to ferment in this cosseted environment for 86 hours. After this careful incubation, the coffee is then ushered onto raised beds for a slow, languid drying process spanning over 29 days.

Imagine, if you will, the delicate notes of a fine wine; juicy white grapes that burst with sweetness, followed by the refreshingly crisp tones of tart apple and citrus. This intricate melody of flavours then mellows to a dry, clean finish. As the journey unfolds, a hint of cinnamon weaves its way through the experience, contributing a gentle spice that lingers long after the final sip.
